Urgently seeking an experienced final home for a Mini Shetland Pony

We are looking for an experienced and responsible final home for our Mini Shetland Pony (87 cm, born on 01.01.2014 according to the equine passport).

We took him over in October 2024 from a animal welfare organization due to poor conditions. At that time, he was destined for slaughter. We wanted to give him a chance.

With the support of a horsemanship trainer, we practiced several times. Unfortunately, we lack the time to work intensively with him daily. Additionally, due to past incidents, we have lost the necessary confidence in handling him. Since we have children—who are already 13 years old—we can no longer responsibly take this risk.

Regrettably, we have to admit that we can no longer meet his needs.

He exhibits pronounced aggressive behavior towards humans. He bites and kicks deliberately, which has already resulted in serious injuries multiple times. According to the trainer, this is not purely fear-based but an over years learned behavior that he has apparently found successful. He associates humans with mistrust and often reacts with direct aggression.

In the herd, however, he has developed very well. He lives with us in a mixed group of ten mares and geldings in an open stable with 24/7 hay. Integration took several months, as the other horses initially avoided him. Now, he is well integrated socially and even plays with the other horses.

Health-wise, he has club feet as well as a knee and hip injury. Therefore, he is neither suitable for riding nor driving.

Important: Please do not be fooled by his adorable appearance. He is not a pony for children, beginners, or a “cute Shetland for casual riding.” Currently, he is unpredictable and can become dangerous for humans.

We explicitly do not wish for a quick resale or a “wandering trophy,” but rather a permanent home with a very experienced person who is aware of the challenges and can approach him with expertise, patience, and consistency.

A place where he is simply expected to “function” would not be fair—for either him or the people. Therefore, we only place him in proven experienced hands.

If you are genuinely interested, we look forward to receiving a personal message with information about your experience and how you would care for him.

The sale or transfer is private and excludes any warranty. All known health issues and behavioral abnormalities have been disclosed to the best of our knowledge. No guarantee or warranty is provided.
