$10,000 including fitted Steve Edwards Trail Lite saddle and tack package
Located in Pleasanton, Texas

Red Hawk is a handsome red-sorrel American Mammoth Jackstock gelding with excellent conformation, substantial size, smooth movement, and more than 1,000 miles of genuine riding experience.

Foaled in November 2018, Red stands 14.2 hands and is registered with the American Mammoth Jackstock Registry. He was bred by Garrett Mammoth Jackstock in Oklahoma.

Red has logged over 1,000 miles on rough-country trails, public roads, hills, water crossings, organized rides, and parades. This is not a donkey whose experience is limited to an arena or pasture—he has been out in the real world and has seen a great deal.

He rides both alone and in groups and has traveled comfortably with horses, donkeys, and wagons. His experience includes large San Antonio Rodeo Days rides and Bishop Mule Days in California, where he encountered heavy foot traffic, wagons and teams, water trucks, mopeds, dogs, and the general commotion of a major public event.

Red is very confident around road traffic and tolerant of dogs both on and off leash. He has also been ridden around children playing basketball and other neighborhood activity. He rides well in parades and handles busy environments sensibly.

He walks out at a useful trail pace and is capable of traveling with speed when asked, although he generally prefers a calm, steady walk. Red is naturally gaited and offers a smooth single-foot gait, often referred to as the “donkey shuffle.”

He will cross water when asked, although he may prefer to stop and evaluate the situation before deciding that getting his feet wet is truly necessary. Very donkey. Very reasonable.

Red trailers well and loads into different types of trailers. He may occasionally pause or require patient encouragement, but he can generally be coaxed in without a major issue.

He is barefoot, current on Coggins and vaccinations, has his teeth checked annually, and last received dental work approximately two years ago. He has no known health or soundness issues.

Red is highly treat motivated and responds well to calm, consistent, reward-based handling. He can be slow to bond with a new person, but once he trusts someone, he becomes deeply loyal and committed. He is not the type to instantly hand his heart to every stranger, but once his trust is earned, it means something.

Red has been ridden by riders of varying experience levels and is a solid, experienced saddle donkey. However, his ideal owner should be confident, patient, safety-conscious, and comfortable working with intelligent longears.

Honest disclosure: Red does not like having his ears handled by unfamiliar people. Once trust is established, he becomes more accepting, but a new owner should expect to build that relationship rather than force the issue.

He also currently needs continued work with hoof handling and farrier appointments. He has completed successful farrier sessions in the past, but he has also become defensive under stress and recently kicked during an attempted appointment. His new owner must be willing to continue careful, consistent training with an experienced, patient farrier.

These handling quirks do not prevent him from being ridden and enjoyed, but they are being disclosed clearly so Red can be matched with the right person.

Red is offered with his fitted 15-inch Steve Edwards Trail Lite mule-and-donkey saddle, along with his accompanying tack package. The saddle is designed specifically for mule and donkey conformation and has been used successfully on him for trail riding and long miles.

Price: $10,000 including saddle and tack package

Extensive photos and videos are available showing Red under saddle, on trails, in traffic, in groups, around dogs and crowds, crossing water, navigating hills, and participating in public events.

Registration paperwork is in hand. A prepurchase examination is welcome at the buyer’s expense.
