Er gehört zu den Pferden, die ihre Zeit mit Menschen wirklich genießen, und dank seiner großen Teddybär-Persönlichkeit schließt man ihn sehr schnell ins Herz.
Was die meisten Menschen an Pistol überrascht, ist sein Alter. Er ist erst vier Jahre alt, zeigt aber nicht diese unruhige, unreife Art, die man bei einem jungen Pferd manchmal erwartet. Er ist von Natur aus sehr gelassen und entspannt und nimmt neue Dinge in der Regel souverän an.

Wir haben ihn an das Springen herangeführt, und innerhalb von etwa 20 Minuten begann er zu verstehen, was wir von ihm wollten, und schien dabei echten Spaß zu haben. Natürlich ist er im Springen noch sehr unerfahren, aber aufgrund seiner Größe, seiner Bewegungen, seiner Einstellung und seiner Lernbereitschaft denke ich, dass er das Potenzial zu einem wirklich tollen Nachwuchspferd für den englischen Reitsport oder das Springen hat.
Ich könnte ihn mir auch gut für jemanden vorstellen, der sich später für die Fuchsjagd interessiert. Er hat die nötige Größe und Substanz, ist gerne unterwegs und – am wichtigsten – besitzt einen vernünftigen Kopf. Ich denke, so etwas ist schwer beizubringen. Man kann die Ausbildung eines Pferdes verbessern, aber es ist ausgesprochen angenehm, wenn es von Anfang an einen klaren und besonnenen Kopf mitbringt.
Pistol hat außerdem viel Zeit außerhalb der Reitbahn verbracht. Er wurde ausgiebig im Gelände geritten, ist im Umgang mit Verkehr sicher und hat sich gegenüber den verschiedenen Dingen, denen wir ihn ausgesetzt haben, stets sehr vernünftig gezeigt. Er ist kein Pferd, das nach etwas sucht, vor dem es sich fürchten kann. Wenn etwas Neues auftaucht, besteht seine normale Reaktion darin, es anzuschauen, auf seinen Reiter zu hören und weiterzumachen.
Für ein erst vierjähriges Pferd verfügt Pistol meiner Meinung nach bereits über eine beeindruckende Grundlage. Gleichzeitig liegt seine gesamte Zukunft noch vor ihm – und genau das ist vielleicht mein Lieblingsaspekt an ihm.
Du kaufst kein Pferd, das bereits auf eine einzige bestimmte Aufgabe festgelegt wurde. Er hatte einen guten Start, konnte Erfahrungen im echten Leben sammeln und ist nun in einem Alter, in dem jemand diese Grundlage nehmen und selbst entscheiden kann, was aus ihm werden soll.
Behalte ihn im Westernbereich. Schlage mit ihm den Weg in Richtung englisches Reiten ein. Entwickle ihn zum Springpferd. Probiere die Fuchsjagd aus. Reite mit ihm ins Gelände. Oder mache ihn zu einem wirklich schönen vielseitigen Allrounder.
Pistol ist bereit, dass jemand eine Richtung auswählt und seine Ausbildung darauf aufbaut.
Und ganz gleich, welche Richtung es am Ende wird: Am Tor wird dich immer derselbe große graue Teddybär erwarten.

Pistols Before Dawn, or “Pistol” as we call him, is a 2022 registered AQHA dapple grey gelding standing just shy of 15.3 hands tall. He’s a big, beautiful young gelding with plenty of substance, and somehow an even bigger personality.
The best way I can describe Pistol is a giant puppy dog in a horse’s body.
He’s almost always the first one to meet you at the gate and absolutely loves attention. If you have an afternoon to waste grooming a horse, Pistol will happily volunteer. He’s the kind that genuinely enjoys spending time with people, and his big teddy-bear personality makes him very easy to get attached to.
What surprises most people about Pistol is his age. He’s only four years old, but he doesn’t have that busy, immature attitude you sometimes expect from a young horse. He’s naturally pretty chill and laid-back about life and tends to take new things in stride.
Most of Pistol’s riding has been Western, and he already has a really nice foundation underneath him. He’s more whoa than go, but he’s responsive when you ask him to move out. He carries himself beautifully and has a naturally elegant frame for such a big, stout horse.
Recently, we’ve started playing around with some English riding, and that’s where Pistol really surprised me.
He absolutely loves it.
We introduced him to jumping, and within about 20 minutes he had started figuring out what we were asking and seemed to genuinely enjoy himself. Obviously, he’s still very new to jumping, but between his size, movement, attitude, and willingness to learn, I think he has the potential to make someone a really fun English or jumping prospect.
I could also see him being a neat horse for someone interested in eventually getting into fox hunting. He has the size and substance, he’s comfortable being out and about, and most importantly, he has a sensible mind. That’s something I think is hard to teach—you can improve a horse’s training, but it’s awfully nice when they start out with a good head on their shoulders.
Pistol has also spent plenty of time outside of the arena. He’s been ridden extensively on the trails, is comfortable around traffic, and has been very sensible about the different things we’ve exposed him to. He’s not a horse that goes looking for something to be afraid of. If something new comes along, his normal response is to look at it, listen to his rider, and carry on.
For only being four years old, I think Pistol already has an impressive foundation. At the same time, he still has his whole future ahead of him, which may be my favorite thing about him.
You aren’t buying a horse that has already been pushed into one specific job. He’s had a good start, he’s been given real-world experience, and now he’s at an age where someone can take that foundation and decide what they want him to become.
Keep him Western. Take him down the English road. Develop him as a jumper. Explore fox hunting. Trail ride him. Or make him into a really nice all-around horse.
Pistol is ready for someone to pick a direction and keep building from here.
And whatever direction that ends up being, you’re still going to have that same big grey teddy bear waiting for you at the gate.

Je pourrais également très bien l’imaginer comme un cheval intéressant pour quelqu’un souhaitant éventuellement se lancer dans la chasse au renard. Il possède la taille et la substance nécessaires, il est à l’aise à l’extérieur et, surtout, il a un mental raisonnable. C’est quelque chose qu’il me semble difficile d’enseigner : on peut améliorer la formation d’un cheval, mais il est particulièrement appréciable qu’il ait déjà une bonne tête sur les épaules.
Pistol a également passé beaucoup de temps en dehors de la carrière. Il a été largement monté en extérieur, est à l’aise au milieu de la circulation et s’est montré très raisonnable face aux différentes situations auxquelles nous l’avons confronté. Naturalmente è ancora alle primissime armi con il salto, ma, considerando la sua taglia, i suoi movimenti, il suo atteggiamento e la sua disponibilità a imparare, penso che abbia il potenziale per diventare un compagno davvero divertente per chi cerca un cavallo da equitazione inglese o un promettente soggetto da salto.
Riuscirei anche a immaginarlo come un ottimo cavallo per qualcuno interessato ad avvicinarsi in futuro alla caccia alla volpe. Ha la taglia e la struttura necessarie, è a suo agio fuori e in movimento e, cosa più importante, ha una mente equilibrata. È una qualità che, a mio avviso, è difficile da insegnare: si può migliorare la preparazione di un cavallo, ma è davvero bello quando parte già con la testa sulle spalle.
Pistol ha trascorso molto tempo anche fuori dal campo. È stato montato a lungo sui sentieri, è tranquillo in presenza del traffico e si è dimostrato molto ragionevole di fronte alle diverse situazioni a cui lo abbiamo esposto. Non è un cavallo che va in cerca di qualcosa di cui avere paura. Quando si presenta una novità, la sua reazione normale è guardarla, ascoltare il suo cavaliere e proseguire.

Hij draagt zichzelf prachtig en heeft voor zo’n groot, stevig paard van nature een elegante houding.

We hebben hem laten kennismaken met springen en binnen ongeveer twintig minuten begon hij al te begrijpen wat we van hem vroegen. Het leek erop dat hij er echt plezier in had. Uiteraard is hij nog maar net begonnen met springen, maar gezien zijn formaat, bewegingen, instelling en bereidheid om te leren, denk ik dat hij het potentieel heeft om voor iemand een ontzettend leuke hunter- of springpaardprospect te worden.
Ik zie hem ook zeker als een interessant paard voor iemand die zich uiteindelijk wil gaan bezighouden met vossenjacht. Hij heeft het formaat en de substantie, voelt zich prettig wanneer hij onderweg is en heeft vooral een verstandig karakter. Dat is iets waarvan ik denk dat het moeilijk aan te leren is: je kunt de training van een paard verbeteren, maar het is ontzettend fijn wanneer ze van nature al een goed hoofd op hun schouders hebben.
Pistol heeft ook veel tijd buiten de rijbaan doorgebracht. Hij is uitgebreid op buitenritten gereden, is vertrouwd met verkeer en is heel verstandig omgegaan met de verschillende dingen waarmee we hem hebben laten kennismaken. Hij is geen paard dat zelf op zoek gaat naar iets om bang voor te zijn. Wanneer er iets nieuws op zijn pad komt, is zijn normale reactie om ernaar te kijken, naar zijn ruiter te luisteren en vervolgens verder te gaan.
Voor een paard van slechts vier jaar oud heeft Pistol naar mijn mening al een indrukwekkende basis. Tegelijkertijd ligt zijn hele toekomst nog voor hem, en dat is misschien wel wat ik het mooiste aan hem vind.
Je koopt geen paard dat al in één specifieke richting is geduwd. Hij heeft een goede start gehad, praktijkervaring opgedaan en is nu op een leeftijd waarop iemand die basis verder kan ontwikkelen en zelf kan bepalen wat hij uiteindelijk moet worden.
Houd hem westerngericht. Kies voor de Engelse richting. Leid hem op als springpaard. Verken de vossenjacht. Maak buitenritten met hem. Of ontwikkel hem tot een heel fijn allroundpaard.
Pistol is er klaar voor dat iemand een richting kiest en van daaruit verder met hem opbouwt.

Oczywiście wciąż jest bardzo początkujący w skokach, ale biorąc pod uwagę jego wielkość, ruch, nastawienie i chęć do nauki, uważam, że ma potencjał, by stać się dla kogoś świetnym koniem do jazdy angielskiej lub skoków.
Widzę go również jako interesującego konia dla kogoś, kto chciałby w przyszłości spróbować polowania na lisy. Ma odpowiednią wielkość i substancję, dobrze czuje się poza stajnią, a przede wszystkim ma rozsądny charakter. To coś, czego moim zdaniem trudno konia nauczyć – można poprawić jego wyszkolenie, ale wspaniale jest, gdy od początku ma dobrze poukładane w głowie.
Pistol spędził również dużo czasu poza ujeżdżalnią. Był intensywnie jeżdżony w terenie, dobrze czuje się w pobliżu ruchu ulicznego i bardzo rozsądnie reagował na różne sytuacje, z którymi miał okazję się zetknąć. Możesz pozostawić go w stylu western. Możesz skierować go na drogę jazdy angielskiej. Możesz rozwijać go jako konia skokowego. Możesz spróbować z nim polowania na lisy. Jeździć z nim w teren. Albo wyszkolić go na naprawdę dobrego konia wszechstronnego.
