We are overflowing with joy and proud to offer “Diego”! Diego is a registered 6-year-young, 15.3-hand Friesian x Quarter Horse gelding. Diego is America’s favorite color — Grulla! With his leg bars, stripes, and bold dorsal stripe down his back, you could pick him out of any crowd.
Diego is the kind of gelding you truly enjoy spending time with — the kind you want to ride and the type of horse you are proud to own. He is incredibly friendly, and if you enjoy Golden Retrievers, you may have just found something even better. Quite honestly, Diego identifies as a dog! Whether he’s in a stall or out in 100 acres of green grass, Diego will always be the first to find you.
Under saddle, Diego is very well trained and presents a lot of class while doing so. He has quite the résumé and is truly a “man of many jobs,” as we like to say. Diego knows his leads, effortlessly picks up the correct one, and even performs flying lead changes. He has spent plenty of time in the arena trotting and loping circles, soaring over jumps, side-passing to gates, and handling whatever else you may ask of him.
Diego also has training and experience in the English discipline and shows exceptional talent to be someone’s next dressage mount. With his smooth movement, willingness to learn, and natural presence, he has all the qualities to excel in the English world while still remaining versatile enough to enjoy in many different directions.
Although he is a superstar in the arena, Diego also has a wide variety of outdoor experience. He has been ridden on gravel roads, state routes, railroad tracks, and more. He is traffic safe and accustomed to riding through the woods, on trails, and through creeks. We have even taken him through a fast-food drive-thru — and don’t worry, he got himself an ice cream cone too!
If saddling up and riding is not your thing, Diego still has you covered. He drives single or double, pulls a carriage beautifully, and is user-friendly enough for anyone to hitch and drive.
In the barn, Diego is a complete gentleman. He stalls well, stands quietly to be tacked and hitched, lowers his head willingly for the bridle, and will even side-pass over to the mounting block to pick up his partner for the next adventure. Diego stands quietly for baths — and may enjoy them more than most horses — stands to be clipped, and is a farrier’s dream to shoe.
Diego wears a size 4 shoe, and although he may be big in size, heart, and love for his people, he truly is just a “puppy dog” wrapped up in a big, fancy Grulla gelding’s body.
